Create a professional explainer video for under $275!
Before we get started, let's cover what an explainer video is and what it is suppose to do for your business.
An explainer video is a 1-2 minute video that introduces a business or product. They are used to get people interested without taking up much time and all and help avoid text-heavy website pages that no one wants to read. An explainer video usually identifies a problem, introduces the solution, then explains how the solution works in simple details. Explainer videos are usually a little quirky, memorable and fun.
Now that we've got that out of the way, let's get down to brass tacks and talk about how you can save a butt-load of money but still have a video created as good or even better than the one below. I'm going to tell you exactly what we did, step-by-step to create the video, and why an explainer video will add tons of value to your online presence.
In this article, we will review:
- How to plan your script.
- Finalizing your script.
- Adding a voiceover.
- Adding background music.
- Choosing a video pack.
- Mix the ingredients with a pro.
- Save money!
Explainer videos start with a great script
Any marketing piece should start with a killer script. Whether you are planning a TV commercial, radio advertisement, or explainer video, the script makes all the difference in the world. The script is also the easiest place to blow your advertising. Create a bad script and you'll do more public harm to your business than good. Create a kick-ass script and you'll see positive results... guaranteed.
I get it. Most people are not marketing gurus or script ninjas. This probably means you too. Rather than trying to save a dime and do it yourself, do it right the first time and have a script created for you. It can be cheaper than you think. Here's how we did it.
1. Plan your script
To do this, here's what you need to identify:
- The problem
- The solution
- The company
To create enough content to generate a script, write down 3-4 sentences for each of the points above. Keep them very concise and straight to the point. An example might look like this:
Problem: Marketing a business has changed and is challenging. Traditional marketing options are no longer relevant. Businesses need a strong internet presence to compete effectively against competitors. Websites are often hard to set up and require maintenance and technical know-how.
Solution: ZeroZen Design offers a turn-key internet presence solution. We build a website using the latest design trends and conversion methods. Once the website is built, we offer long-term technical and educational support so businesses can get the most out of a website.
Company: ZeroZen Design is a web presence company that works closely with clients to help businesses succeed online. We've worked with over 500 clients around the world to create amazing sites that get noticed. We've worked with clients in just about every industry and specialize in WordPress
Once you've completed your homework above, it's time to have a professional get involved. Don't worry - it doesn't cost a lot.
Click here to head over to Fiverr. Fiverr is an online marketplace where professionals do things starting at five bucks! Once you are on the site, create your account and search for "explainer video script". It should look something like this:
2. Finalize your script
Working with the professional from Fiverr, they will create a polished explainer video script that lasts between 1 and 2 minutes. It's ok if your script runs a little longer, but 2 minutes is the magic number.
The final script should be interesting and engaging. The first 30 seconds of the video should really grab the attention of the viewer so your script needs to be video ready. Although a majority of an explainer video falls on the visual aspects, the script makes the video what it is.
Now that you've gotten a professional script for your explainer video, it's time to turn it into voice. To do this, use the Fiverr marketplace again. Click here to find voiceover talent for your explainer video.
For the video above, we used linneas88. She does a very professional job and is very quick. If you use her for your voiceover, she will need the following:
- Your script
- tonality/feel of the voiceover
- Pronunciations for anything out of the ordinary
- How it will be used (explainer video)
I'm sure that most of the other voiceover professionals will ask for similar things.
Some things to keep in mind when selecting a voiceover professional for your explainer video:
- Choose a voice that fits your product/service/company. If you are a UK based company, choose a british accent. If you sell a product for men, use a mans voice.
- Tone is very important. Make sure the tone of voiceover is in-line with the message of the script and video.
4. Background music
In the example video above, you will hear a catchy tune in the background. This came from Audio Jungle - a marketplace for all things audio.
It is easy to get overwhelmed listening to all the music options available for your new explainer video. I suggest starting with a music genre. Something that goes well with your business and fits the business personality. Next, make sure the music is catchy. Something that people will remember. If you play the video above a couple times, you'll be whistling it for the rest of the day.
Make sure that the audio file you select has a clean section of music that is going to be able to span the length of your video without having to hack it up and piece it back together. In other words, make sure there is a good 2 minutes of audio that can run untouched. This will make your explainer video cheaper to put together, and offer less room for noticeable mistakes.
6. Creating your Explainer Video

Find out which 6 plugins I use on every site and so should you!
If you don't know what a plugin is, here is a quick explanation:
A WordPress plugin is a file that you can install on your website to add additional functionality quickly and easily. There are many free plugins that are awesome, and there are also paid plugins that are even MORE awesome!
There you go.
So, let's get to the meat and potatoes
Over the years I've learned (through trial and error), which plugins you should ALWAYS include on your website. Here's my top secret list and links to them.
- EWWW Image Optimizer - optimizes images you upload automagically so you don't have ridiculous photo sizes slowing down your website.
- Simple Mail Address Encoder - If you put your email address on your website (which most people do), you are at risk of it being harvested, sold to the highest bidder, and then overrun with spam in your inbox. This will stop that from happening.
- Slim Stat Analytics - Did you know Google Analytics hides about 70% of your keyword data? Don't believe me? Look at the top of your Google Analytics stats and you will see an "Other" listed. That "Other" is a majority of your traffic and they won't share it with you (unless you pay for it). Slim Stats gives you better analytics and all of it...for free!
- Use Google Libraries - This is a speed thing. I'm not going to try to explain it. Just add it.
- WP-SpamShield - WordPress sites can get spam through many different ways, mostly comments. This will keep that from happening. Add it and see how many it blocks. Amazin'!
- Advanced Database Cleaner - Remember your parents always telling you to keep your room clean? This is the automated WordPress cleaner. It allows you to clean out old cluttered stuff without needing to be a nerd. Just push buttons!
